Music Videos
Phubus
Phubus wanted an edgy, exciting music video to accompany their heavy track 'Its Not My Fault' which was their debut single in 2007. They also wanted a narrative which relied more on visuals than outright storytelling and to couple that with an energetic live performance element.
The video was primarily shot handheld to generate energy which matches the vibe of the song and the movements of the band. The narrative element was developed around the idea of a girl inside a room, scribbling on paper but not seeing anything appearing on the paper, to conjure an idea of madness. She rips up the paper and screws it into balls and gets more agitated as the video progresses, suggesting whatever she is writing is making her angry.
As the video moves on, she removes items of her restricting black clothing and moves into purer, white clothes. As she does so, her movements become less agitated and more calm and for the first time, via UV light, we see whats written on the paper - all her thoughts, worries, hopes, dreams, fears and plans for life. She organizes the paper into piles and puts it behind her, suggesting she has now worked through her worries and the things that were making her angry and put them into order in her life and put them behind her and can now move on, purer than before.
The performance element was designed to be dark and grungy to reflect the bands image and features a lot of frantic camerawork aided by After Effects to really create a visual representation of the band's sound.
Filmed across two days in Ada Street Studios in London, we lit both sections very differently with the Gothic Girl sections being fairly bright and then lit by UV and the band being darker and having shadows cast across the walls behind them.
