Romain - Temptations
Romain wanted a rap based performance video which featured a narrative element based around the name and theme of the song 'Temptations'.
Director Andreas Eigenmann developed a narrative which featured Romain in an updated version of a Bible tale. Romain is tempted in three different ways, walking away each time to become stronger and leaving that world behind at the end. He is tempted by typical rap situations (drugs, money, sex) and the idea was developed to show that these particular things have no place in Romain's life.
The video has a number of distinct looks to it and the narrative sequences take place in black and white and the dream-state narrative sequences are in over-emphasized colour schemes - hints of blue and coldness in the drug dealing temptation scene, hints of red and warm colours in the bedroom temptation scene.
We filmed on HDV Sony Z1E's and utilised natural lighting for many of the scenes, including the sunset during some of the rap performance footage. The hotel scene and gambling scenes were lit to be, respectively, quite subdued and very dark and shadowy to reflect the situations in each scene.
The video was structured to have each scene shot in a different way with the hotel scene being calmer and more relaxed than the drug dealing scene which was more handheld and edgy. The park scenes have a widescreen, semi-western style to them to empahsize Romain's smallness in this world. The rap sections were shot by hand and on tripod, the handheld camera giving the scenes an energy not often seen in rap videos.
The video features cameos from many of Romain's peers including Sway and Mr Ti2bs and was shot over two days in locations around London including Finsbury Park, The Bath House in Soho, The Apex Hotel and Muswell Hill.
