TWM - "Joystick"

TWM wanted something a bit different for the music video for their 2007 track 'Joystick' which features suggestive, quirky lyrics.

We developed an idea about a video game player whose girlfriend walks out on him, fed up of his layabout attitude. Suddenly realising what has happened he takes steps to get his girlfriend back...or near enough...by building an obidient robotic clone of her! Dressing her up in typical male fantasy clothing, the robot does his bidding until a night out results in the robot girlfriend 'waking up' and realising she doesn't have to be used like this. The robot then slowly realises what the boyfriend / creator is like and takes steps of her own to enable her to walk out on him...

The video was filmed over two days at a house in Surrey which fitted the bright, colourful and clean look we wanted for the video. The costumes were selected for their colours but also their playful nature. The DJ's wanted sexy and fun - but not too extreme. The narrative was designed to create something a bit different from the usual dance video and to give a funny and sexy storyline which spins the audiences expectations of the outcome on its head.

We filmed on High Definition Video and utilised a track and dolly to create a different dimension to the camerawork and allow for fluid, smooth movements in various scenes. We shot in a style slightly inspired by Edgar Wright ('Spaced', 'Shaun Of The Dead') which was quick and zippy with a fair amount of movement and we edited to a fast pacedstyle which reflected the beat and used the odd jump cut and looping motion here and there.

JOYSTICK has been bubbling along nicely on the underground scene for a while now. It was Number 1 on the Australian Dance radio show, ZFM, for 4 weeks and managed to stay in the top 5 for a total of 10 weeks. Niels Von Geyer loved the minimalism of the Jo Jamato mix, in America it was championed by Gary Cannavo of MASSPOOL DJ association; Delmar Browne and Joey Rivaldo of SIRIUS Radio all of whom opted for the robotic feel of the original Radio edit. In the UK, James Blond, Lee Butler, Pencil, Radio Killaz and Miss XS all went for the Power club mix with its great references to the UK music scene and even Eric Morillo got in on the act, raving about the Trinitronic extra mix.
